Install/Uninstall FAQ

Q. How can I make Driver Detective update my drivers?

A. First of all, you will have to download it and install it to your computer.
Then, you need a serial number to activate it. Either click the Register link on the webpage or click register in the program for a serial number.
Finally, you will need to enter that serial number into Driver Detective and click submit and you are done.

Q. Can I upgrade Driver Detective or do I have to install a new version?

A. Any available updates for Driver Detective will be just converting your old program into a newer one with enhanced features. There is no need to start a clean install unless you are experiencing trouble when trying to update it.
Driver Detective is a self-updating program that will automatically keeps itself updated so you do not have to worry about this.
If you uninstall it, you can get the serial number for a fresh install on the website, at the Register area where you can login.

Q. How to uninstall Driver Detective?

A. To uninstall Driver Detective you need to go to the Start menu, All Programs and to the Driver Detective folder. Here you will see an Uninstall Driver Detective link. You need to click it and press ok in the prompting window to fully remove it from your computer.

Q. Can I install Driver Detective if I am running a different operating system, other than Windows?

A. Driver Detective does not run on other operating systems such as MAC or Linux and there are no current plans on upgrading it for other OS. Driver Detective is a program that is compatible with all Microsoft Windows Versions, including Windows Xp, Windows Vista, Windows 2000 and Windows 7.

Q. Can I download Driver Detective for free?

A. Downloading driver detective is free. You can download and install the program right away. You can also use some of its features including the system scan that shows which drivers are outdated without any fees. But if you want to update and fix drivers, you need a serial number to unlock the program.

Update and Backup FAQ

Q. How do I update drivers using Driver Detective?

A. To update your drivers using Driver Detective you need to run the application, and click Scan. Now you will be prompted abut the number of drivers present on your computer. The outdated drivers can be upgraded immediately if your copy is registered.
If you have not registered Driver Detective yet, then you can obtain your serial number by clicking on the register link and completing the process.
Once the program is registered, you will be able to click the Update button. You can choose which drivers to update yourself from the left hand menu. Before updating, you can choose to backup present drivers. If you don't want to, you can continue updating without backing up.

Q. How long does it take to update my drivers with Driver Detective?

A. The overall scanning and updating process is very fast when using driver detective.
In case you have a very slow computer, or a bad internet connection, the process might take a little longer than expected. If the internet connection resets right when you are abut to download drivers, close the program, and try again when it's working well.

Q. Can I use driver Detective to migrate from my Operating System to another?

A. The greatest thing about Driver Detective is that it can also upgrade the Windows version. You can use the built-in Easy Migrator to update you windows version, or even to go back to a previous version of Windows.
To use the Easy Backup Wizard you have to run Driver Detective and open this wizard. Here you can choose the operating system you want to migrate to and create driver backup disks that can help you install drivers for that system.

Program Settings FAQ

Q.1. How do I set the computer type in Driver Detective?

A. You have to choose the type of computer you are using before running a driver scan. Driver Detective will automatically detect most types of standard computers, such as notebooks that haven't been enhanced with new components, and will show the system information it detected at your welcoming screen.
If you feel it is not correct, click the Tools tab in the program and change the computer type you are using. This is essential if you want the program to find you compatible updates.

Q. What can I do if my computer is custom built/not standard or recognizable configuration?

A. If your computer is made up by components, as it often occurs when we are talking about desktop computers, and if Driver Detective does not automatically detect all the installed devices, then you have to go to Tools and check the "Use Driver Detective Universal Match Intelligence" to correctly detect your component types.

Q. How can I download more than one driver at a time?

A. After you have registered Driver Detective, you can choose the number of simultaneous driver downloads. To chance default settings go to Tools, and adjust the number of downloads by changing the number in the corresponding box.

Q.What are unplugged devices? How can I skip unplugged devices scans?

A. If you are using a wireless mouse on your laptop or if you plug in a web cam once in awhile, Driver Detective will see the specific drivers of these devices even if they are not plugged in. If you don't want to scan for new drivers for these devices then you can uncheck the unplugged devices scanning option in the Tools menu.

Q.Can I use Driver Detective behind a proxy? (I'm using a proxy or a firewall and I can't install using Driver Detective.)

A. If you want to run Driver Detective while behind a proxy server, then you cannot connect to driver's downloading websites unless you enter the proxy setting into the program. To do this, you will have to access the Tools menu, and select the Proxy option to be able to enter your proxy settings.

Q.Where are my downloaded drivers?

A. If you want to share the drivers, you have downloaded or to store them for later usage then you will have to know the download folder. To see it, go to the Tools system. Here you can also change the download location if you want.

Serial Number Problems

Q.I can't remember the serial number/I forgot to note down the serial number.

A. If you have already registered with Driver Detective, then you can get your serial number back by accessing the Register link on the webpage again and entering your member details. Once you are logged in, you will see the serial number that you need to reenter when you install Driver Detective again.

Q.What can I do if I changed my email address?

A. If you changed the email address you used to register with Driver Detective, then you can assign a new address to your account by contacting the customer support service and making sure you include all details: old email address you used to register, your name, order details. Then also specify the new email address you are using now.

Q.If I reinstall the operating system, can I still use Driver Detective's license?

A. Yes, you can use the same serial number for an unlimited number of reinstallments.

Q.What can I do when Driver Detective is recommending the wrong driver?

A. The only known issues are related to the sound card. Sometimes when you are using sound cards using Creative technology, an error might occur. This means Driver Detective might recommend the X-Fi driver for an Audigy sound card.
If you are 100% sure you are using a different type of sound card than the one recommended, then use the Alternative Driver option to select the correct driver.

Q.How to fix the communication error I always get when trying to update drivers with Driver Detective?

A. If you are getting an error when Driver Detective is running then they will fall under one of the following categories.

Proxy errors- If you are using a proxy make sure you enter the proxy server information in Driver Detective otherwise it will not be able to connect and update your drivers.

400 Code Errors- If you are getting an error with code 400, then it means you are getting a bad request error. This often happens when users have Norton Tools or VCOM Professional Suite installed. To fix this problem you can try to upgrade these problems. If things are still not alleviating, then uninstalling them might be the last resort.

Communication errors- You might experience communication errors when Driver Detective seems to disconnect while you are downloading your drivers. In this case your internet connection might be flaky or your firewall is not configured correctly. Always allow Driver Detective communicate to the internet using either port 80 or port 443.

Font Error- To correctly display the text in Driver Detective you need to have installed some Microsoft fonts. They are usually present in any Windows version, but if you have removed them you need to add the following back: Arial, Microsoft Sans Serif.
